Computer restarted out of nowhere and began updating to Windows 10, I was only going to upgrade with a reinstall but hopefully this doesn’t cause issues. ARGH!

My laptop upgraded to Windows 10, and I haven’t had any problems, at all...

Welcome to the future.

It’s only the auto install thing I’m worried about, I’ve heard it has caused some issues but hopefully those people were a small minority, and I think I’d be too lazy to reinstall if it goes ok, so I’ll see.

Windows 10 will install whenever it wants, there have been multiple cases of a computer shutting down with 8 and by the morning mysteriously running 10. Really tempted to give Linux a try because of it.

If there’s one thing most oppos don’t like, it’s the future lol.

I was pretty sure I had a setting that turned off the auto update, but if it goes ok, tbh, I won’t even be mad.

I love W10, haven’t had a single issue with it, but the whole thing of installing without consent is just absurd.

Seems to be going ok so far though....
Regardless, I’m remaining vigilant for anything I can be pissed off about.

The only thing I would be wary about with the auto-install (other than the fact that it’s installing a new OS without your permission) is that I assume it will skip over the parts where you can turn certain “features” on or off. Like location access and such.
The way I understand it though, you can’t just do a clean install without doing an upgrade install first. The upgrade install registers your hardware as the product key and then you’re free to do a clean install. That’s the way I’ve done all of the upgrades I’ve done so far (5 or 6) and I’ve had absolutely no problems with it activating.
Generally, Windows 10 is much better than even 7 is, let alone 8/8.1. I’d just make sure that when you do a clean install you catch the point where it asks if you want to use normal settings or go to advanced setting (they make the link small) because they have some shady stuff in there. Other than that, everything has worked straight out of the box whether it’s on laptop/desktop or touch/non-touchscreen so I’m alright with it.

Yeah I’m always on the lookout for sneaky options on installers, and it was pretty small when it suggests you use the express settings. It looks to be working so I might not bother with a reinstall.

Yeah, and the privacy nonsense I had to go through. The OS itself is very nice, though.

this happens to me every time when I’m in the middle of something extremely important and there seems to be no way of postponing it... ARGHH

Luckily it didn’t take too long for me, maybe around 10 minutes.

I’ve managed to keep the auto update at bay. I might update later this summer though.
Also, I’ve installed Ubuntu as a dual boot, and I use windows solely for games that don’t support Linux. It works really well so far.

Do it. I’ve got it installed alongside windows 8.1, but I use Ubuntu for the majority of things. There are a lot of games that don’t support ubuntu, but a surprisingly large amount do.

I thought I had the auto update disabled but it went anyways, maybe double check every once in a while to make sure. I’ve stuck with Windows basically for games but idk if it’s worth it to have another OS, Windows does enough for me, hell, I was fine with 8.1 lol.

Same, games are the only reason I still have a windows partition. I see that with your case you’d probably have room for another drive to keep the two separate if you do decide to try it.

Yeah I’ve got an ssd which windows and a few applications are on and a 500 gb hdd, I’ve heard good things about Linux though, but I don’t know if I need another OS just for Internet (pretty much).

Well I imagine you would have some games that will work on linux, so it’s more than just that.

Yeah but tbh I don’t see the point in splitting up my games when they’re all together in the first place.
